In the past few years, cyber attacks and cyber threats have been scaling up tremendously with the evolution of data and technologies. Almost every industry is a victim of cyber attacks and cyber threats. One such industry is Utility, a constant target of cyber crimes with a loss of intellectual property, disruption of service and processes and more critical scenarios such as loss of life or injuries. Recently in a survey conducted by Ponemon Institute, 84 percent of the utility organization revealed that the extremity of cyber attacks experienced by them is scaling up. Additionally, 74 percent of these organizations face frequent cyber attacks.

Today organizations are deploying numerous technologies to mitigate these cyber attacks and cyber crimes. But in spite of implementing all these technologies, hackers are still on the move with methods, like phishing with which they can obtain data even from flagged emails. This is due to employee’s lack of knowledge of cyber attacks and cyber crimes. So, organizations should deploy certain training methods for employees to know about these cyber attacks. This process should be a top-down approach; the entire workforce should possess insights regarding cyber threats, not just the cyber experts. Apart from training, organizations can also alert the employees by sharing cybercrime stories with the preventions and solutions. Additionally, organizations can also seek the assistance of North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) which is a self-regulated organization that oversees and regulates North American power grids. Here organizations can make strong connections between companies and individuals, and can organize plans to strengthen the security of utilities.
