For numerous enterprises, the deployment of right Enterprise Resource Planning software can often set a rocky course as "expectation gap" among the various stakeholders may emerge. This gap can exacerbate department-wide "turf wars," slow product adoption. They, therefore, consider adding field service management software to extend the functionalities of ERP, but not each FSM product can tackle all the gaps.
ERP does typically perform proper job tracking, location, and inventory transactions, but it may be a laggard in tracking inventories of mobile trucks. The software must give the inventory visibility for each truck to assess the technician who will have the inventory to perform a service task assigned by dispatchers or automated scheduling software. It must track the requirement to load greater inventory articles onto a truck to fulfill the order of service calls, or if a maintenance unit can be sent to a depot. In this case, an RMA should be automatically generated, and the defect routed to the right repair location.
ERP products are often well-advised to establish the original asset record derived from a production or sales order. After the serialized item is installed, it is often challenging for some solutions to upgrade the asset record with the essential service and maintenance history. FSM software shall be worthy, during the asset life cycle, of tracking work, parts consumed, error codes, location changes, and other transactions.
High-volume transactions, such as the completion of point of sale and order, often take place outside ERP. In the business world, most enterprises are using third-party solutions for large-scale tasks such as sales points. However, field service organizations are also processing transactions in large volumes and these need to be recorded promptly. It is true that an integration system can do almost anything with the right amount of time or costs for an ERP. However, it is tough to make it possible for people in the field and managers to use without an application to manage the process smoothly.
For most of the field service process, the majority of ERP applications are not ideal. This is why a service organization usually extends this recording system by using best-of-breed software. These technologies are earlier supported in their life cycle in best-in-class systems, given developments such as asset-as-a-service, IoT, and augmented reality.
