UL Solutions' new service helps cable manufacturers and utility providers avoid expensive cable system failures.

"Our new testing program for medium voltage cables empowers customers to develop innovative cable systems and enhance power grids that are essential in our daily lives."
To assist wire and cable producers in meeting demands from international markets and advancing cable system safety, UL Solutions, a leader in applied safety research, introduced its Medium Voltage Cable Field Testing Program.
The Medium Voltage Cable Field Testing Program assesses the performance of cable systems. It identifies installation or service aging faults to assist cable producers and owners in proactively address potential concerns. The program comprises condition assessments and commissioning tests, such as monitoring and withstood testing, partial discharge diagnosis, dielectric loss measurements, and neutral corrosion evaluations.
Failures of medium voltage cable systems can substantially impact utility providers and the businesses they serve, resulting in further damage from the failure and loss of revenue and output during an unscheduled outage. Many elements, including cables, connectors, joints, and terminations, can degrade the cabling system's quality, reducing its predicted life and reliability.
The program is UL Solutions' most recent offering in the company's more than 30 years of experience with medium voltage cable systems, including cable and cable accessory design and manufacturing, new material research and development, cable system aging and failure mechanisms, and testing and diagnostic technologies. Experts in energy and utilities from UL Solutions take part in creating testing norms and lead international technical committees for medium voltage cable networks.
