The smart meter rollout in the UK is in full swing. With the government’s estimate of having 50 million homes with smart meters by 2020, the move has been hit by significant delays and rising costs. As suppliers are at only 20 percent of the way towards meeting the target, it is envisaged that they will need to double the output in order to reach the specified target. To enable the efficient installation of smart meters, the technicians need to be equipped with tablets, laptops or at least smartphones so that they can access customer and account information on the fly. This will greatly help with the documentation process and enable faster completion. The issues of serviceability are negatively impacted by the lack of network coverage in certain geographic areas. The irony is that even though smart meters have their own dedicated WAN networks, the technicians that are installing the smart meters still have to depend on the regular network that the general public uses.
This is where Mobile Performance Management (MPM) comes in—it keeps the technician constantly signed in, enabling technicians to work in the remotest of locations, even when there is no signal present. It does this by holding data in a pending queue and connecting uploading/downloading the moment it connects to the network. This gives the technicians the ability to continue working without worrying about the connection. So it is of the utmost importance that the technicians are equipped with MPM so that the 2020 window will be met.
