When Bob Rebori, President of BioMicrobics, Inc., ventured into the realm of wastewater treatment after working as an industrial engineer in New Jersey and relocating to Kansas after 1981, it was for a company with a focus on large municipal water and wastewater treatment plants. Typically, these conventional methods of handling sewage are expensive to set-up, difficult to operate, and need more labor and cost for maintenance. After 14 years, when Rebori became the Vice President of Operations for the International Division, he knew that scaling up the decentralized treatment technology, MicroFAST, was the future of wastewater management.

With the founding of BioMicrobics in 1996, Rebori disrupted the wastewater management industry with both land- and ocean-based offerings that were not only simple to install and maintain but also cost-effective and robust. Having products, personnel, and policies at the core of its business strategy and a worldwide emphasis on the recent environmental concerns, BioMicrobics aids engineers in choosing the right product that works for them. These pre-engineered “Fixed Integrated Treatment Technologies” (FITT®) conforms to health, safety, and environmental protection standards that are ‘made to stock’ to meet the immediate demands of installers, distributors, developers, and local operators.

Unlike most other systems that need full-time operators BioMicrobics’ systems require low maintenance. Besides, BioMicrobics has committed to investing in continuous R&D for better and more refined products. “97 percent of our product development money is utilized in developing widgets to meet the price points of global markets and help clients with affordable prices,” says Rebori.
For instance, the changing regulations and mandatory conservation methods in California with rising droughts have compelled Napa Valley wineries, such as of the Castello di Amorosa winery, to search for wastewater systems that provide water reuse to cope with the increased water-use restrictions. The owners of the winery selected the BioMicrobics BioBarrier HSMBR (High Strength Membrane Bioreactor) for its best treatment-system science, design, and tank material. The optional replacement of the winery’s concrete tanks with three 22,000-gallons/ 83,000-liter fiberglass water tanks were also part of the project, which had BioBarrier HSMBR treatment systems preinstalled. In the first year of this system’s operation, more than 1.35 million gallons of wastewater was treated, and the resultant clean water was used in numerous ways, including vineyard irrigation. The winery got Napa Green-certification, which means they met all the regulatory components of environmental sustainability.

BioMicrobics scales up several of its wastewater treatment technologies to flow capacities from 150 gallons per day to 2,000,000 gallons per day. Currently, BioMicrobics delivers systems that meet Net-Zero Water (NZW) goals to treat and recycle 100 percent wastewater back into drinking water quality. The company has already demonstrated these new NZW systems in a project with Miami University, where students are using the treated wastewater for cooking, cleaning, and even washing. The company also convenes training and workshops in-house and at the more than 40 tradeshows, Fairs, and Expositions on wastewater, greywater, and stormwater systems.

Additionally, BioMicrobics’ subsidiaries—Scienco/FAST (Type II Marine Sanitation Devices & sodium hypochlorite generators) and SeptiTech (trickling filter systems)—provide clean water across the world with onsite systems that deliver energy-efficient wastewater treatment. These wastewater treatment systems are designed for residential, commercial, and community applications.
